After two years away from the Central Virginia area, Tell Us A Tale, the internationally syndicated children’s radio program (heard locally on WTJU 91.1 FM each Sunday from noon to 2 pm), will be putting on a live program at Gravity Lounge celebrating the holidays. The performance will then be produced for radio broadcast. People are encouraged to come for part or all of the holiday show.
Heard on radio stations around the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Tell Us A Tale blends stories and folktales with music for listeners of all ages. For several years there were monthly live shows from the Prism. Since December of 2005, however, they have expanded their performances around the United States and Europe.
To celebrate Christmas and Chanukah, there will be such stories as Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Eric Kimmel’s Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins and the Chanukkah Guest, and the destined to be classic hybrid tale, How Murray Saved Christmas, a Christmas story for Jewish kids, by former Simpsons writer and executive producer, Mike Reiss.
In between the stories, various musical groups from the Central VA area will perform different varieties of holiday tunes, ranging from the Standards (White Christmas, Jingle Bells), to Cajun/Zydeco variations, Gypsy Jazz, and Klezmer Chanukah tunes. The scheduled acts are Jan Smith (Front Porch Americana), Matty Metcalfe & Crewe d'Bayou (Cajun/Zydeco), the Rick Olivarez Trio (Gypsy Jazz), and a UVA Klezmer group, Simchah!.
Tell Us A Tale is composed of its creator, Peter Jones, a popular storyteller and producer of the radio program, and Jen Hoffman, a longtime performer and producer of plays in Central VA.
